Meet Dr. Alexander “Alex” Culp

meet dr alexander culpDr. Alexander “Alex” Culp, DMD, M.S.D.

Dr. Alex Culp is one of the few dual-trained orthodontists and pediatric dentists in the country.  He brings his caring and compassionate nature to make a profound and positive impact for the care of you and your child.  The motivation for pursuing dual-training comes from the inspiration he finds in the precious moments he shares with patients and their families.

A Rock Hill native, he grew up as the son of a general dentist and a dental hygienist.  Given his family’s involvement with dentistry, it was not uncommon for Dr. Alex’s family to discuss dental topics at a young age.  These early conversations lead him and his identical twin brother to pursue careers in dentistry.  Following dental school, Dr. Alex practiced general dentistry with his father and brother prior to deciding to pursue specialty training.

While pursuing a two-year residency in Pediatric Dentistry, he completed training in preventive and therapeutic care for infants and children through adolescence.  This training had a large emphasis on management of patients with medical complexities and special health care needs, as well as management of dental trauma.  Through this program, he completed research regarding pulpal therapy for the primary dentition and presented it at the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Annual Conference.  During his final year of residency, he served his program as chief resident.

Following completion of his first residency, he entered a three-year residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics where his studies focused on orthodontic care for both children and adults.  Through this program, he conducted research focused on craniofacial growth and obtained a master’s degree.  While in his final year of residency, he served as chief resident.

Dr. Culp has successfully completed the board certification process through the American Board of Orthodontics and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, thus designating him as both a board-certified orthodontist and a board-certified pediatric dentist.  He maintains Diplomate status through both organizations.  In addition to private practice, he serves the Medical University of South Carolina’s Department of Orthodontics in the capacity of Clinical Associate Professor.  Dr. Culp’s commitment to collaborative and patient-centered care, his personable demeanor, and his commitment to academic involvement make him a natural fit for the well-established practice of Burrow and Welchel Orthodontics.
